Caduceus Access Code for MDCA 1309 Anatomy and Physiology for Medical Assistants

The Caduceus access code is required for this course and is included in the Seahawk Book Bundle. Do not use the ISBN provided by the bookstore; it is only a placeholder. The interactive e-book provides lectures, assignments, and study tools. Students may print lectures if they prefer, and closed captioning is available.

Important Information

Students should start on Day 1 using the free trial. Payment deferment options are available—see the instructional videos posted in Blackboard for details. All students must register with Caduceus during the first week of class, even if they are waiting for materials or financial aid. Students who have previously taken this course may need to contact Caduceus to reset their account.

Starting Without Bookstore Materials

Students can begin the course immediately even if bookstore materials are delayed. At checkout, select the option to defer payment until the access code is received. If opting out of the Book Bundle, access can be purchased directly from Caduceus for $139.95 by using the Blackboard link.

How to Get Started

Go to the Week 1 Folder in Blackboard. Click on Chapter 1: Lecture Orientation and follow the instructional video or on-screen prompts. Complete all lectures, self-tests, and flashcards by using the assignment links in Blackboard. Do not access materials directly from the publisher’s website unless directed by the instructor.

Technical Support

If you encounter technical problems, contact Caduceus support right away. They will notify your instructor if the issue cannot be resolved.

Non-graded Assignments pertain to assignments graded on a pass/fail basis for completion (e.g., lectures, hear & say exercises, flashcards, etc.)

Course Policies
Instructor Policies

ASSESSMENT METHODS & GRADING POLICY

  • Students should keep a record of their own grades/average.

  • It is not the instructor’s responsibility to average grades for students (grades can be viewed in Blackboard once graded).

  • The instructor reserves the right to add or change assignments during the semester.

  • Grades will not be dropped.

  • Each module focuses on specific learning outcomes, but some activities may be for practice only and not graded.

  • Student learning will be assessed through assignments, quizzes, discussions, labs, participation, exams, or other activities.

  • Due dates are posted weekly in Blackboard.

  • Instructions and grading information will be included for each assignment.

CLASS PARTICIPATION

  • Class participation is required and directly impacts your course average.

  • Logging in is not the same as participating—you must actively engage with course content.

  • Attendance/activity in Blackboard may count as a participation grade.

  • Additional assignments may be added during the semester if necessary.

  • Students must check announcements and emails at least three times per week.

ASSIGNMENTS

  • No make-up assignments.

  • Work not submitted by the deadline will receive a zero.

  • Late assignments will not be accepted or graded.

QUIZZES

  • No make-up quizzes.

  • Quizzes may be weekly.

  • Missed quizzes are recorded as zeroes.

  • Once a quiz closes, it cannot be reopened.

EXAMS

  • No make-up exams.

  • If a student misses an exam, the average of all exam grades (including the zero) will replace the missed exam grade.

  • Example: Exam grades of 100, 100, 0, and 80 = 280 ÷ 4 = 70. The zero is replaced with 70. Final grades: 100, 100, 70, 80.

FINAL EXAM

  • The final exam counts for 15% of the course average.

  • It is comprehensive and must be taken at the scheduled date and time.

  • Failure to take the final exam results in a zero, unless the student qualifies for an exemption.

  • Exemption: Students may skip the final if:

    • All other exams are completed and passed, and

    • The course average is 80 or higher.

    • In this case, the average of all other exam grades will replace the final exam grade.

ACADEMIC HONESTY

  • Any instance of academic dishonesty = zero on that assignment or exam.

  • A second instance = “F” for the course.

WORKING AHEAD

  • Students are encouraged to complete work ahead of deadlines if materials are available in Blackboard.

Attendance Policy

ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION

  • Research shows a strong link between attendance and college success. For this reason, student course activity is monitored weekly.

  • Students must log in to Blackboard and check email/announcements at least 3 times per week, even if they believe all work is complete.

  • Class participation is required and directly impacts your course average. Simply logging in is not enough—you must actively engage with course content.

  • Additional assignments may be added during the week if the instructor deems them necessary.

  • Attendance (measured by activity in Blackboard) may be used as a weekly participation grade.

  • Students are responsible for contacting the instructor by email if absent.

  • Absences do not excuse late or missed coursework. Deadlines remain firm.

DROP/WITHDRAWAL POLICY

  • Students must ensure their name is removed from the roll if they drop/withdraw.

  • Keep a copy of the drop/withdrawal form for records.

  • Return all books, equipment, or items belonging to the department.

  • Texas law limits students to 6 course withdrawals at public colleges/universities. (See LSCPA catalog for details.)

  • See Important Dates section of syllabus.

EMAIL & VOICEMAIL ETIQUETTE

  • Use professional email etiquette: complete sentences, full subject line including name, course, and section number.

  • Voicemail messages must clearly state the student’s name, course, and callback number.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS

  • Students should dress in a way that is professional and respectful.

  • Casual attire is acceptable, but inappropriate/distracting clothing may result in being asked to leave class (counted as an absence in face-to-face classes).

  • Clothing not permitted: items that expose intimate parts, only undergarments without outerwear, sleepwear (pajamas, robes, slippers), clothing that is too tight/loose, or clothing with offensive logos/text.

  • Remember: attire and grooming habits reflect professionalism and may set the stage for success.
